By tune I mean I just recorded myself juggling, then played that back and recorded something else on top of it, and then again, and then again. I’m nowhere near as good as I want to be. This is pretty basic stuff I guess. Also too much echo. And too much stuff in general.
This is my set from Brightest Young Things‘ NYE party at the Capital Skyline Hotel. The RAVE CAMP DJs played in an underground parking lot, in between a moon bounce obstacle course, a laser tag arena, and an open bar.
Some good stuff in this one! I don’t have a track list at the moment but trust me, you will love it! Recorded live at WMUC, broadcast live on October 18 2009 from the the University of Maryland, College Park—the cultural mecca of Prince George’s County.
I do an Internet radio show with a bunch of people on Sunday nights. You can find loose archives here. You can listen live every Sunday from 7-10pm EST at stressfactor.co.uk.
If my set is really good I’ll usually isolate it and post it here separately so whatever!
Where I play a tune, and then I play a famous dance track that sampled that tune. This is my second episode.. I made the first one a month ago, available here.
In this episode, I cover origins for SL2, Freestylers, Alan Braxe and more!
And now for something completely different! This is a recording from a radio show I did last week. In my segment, “Professor Dan Amitai Explains It All”, I played a tune, and followed it with a famous dance track that sampled that tune.
I discuss artists such as Prodigy, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, Kenny Dope and 4hero. Awesome! Definitely check this out.
Robert Axios of Axios Records took a break from his all-analog live PA project to make a dubstep-inspired cover of Josh Wink‘s “Back in Tha Day” off his classic album Herehear. Take a peek at this exclusive Amitai VIP! High quality 320s available for free by request.
Another fun dubstep mix! I wasn’t going to put this one up, but it’s been nearly two months since the last podcast, so I decided to go for it. The ending is pretty hilarious.
Soul, R&B, hip-hop, chopped & screwed, minimal techno… It’s all here! A lot of these tracks are from Whitelabel.net (a free music site for Serato users).
Another idea that will never see the light of day…
I really want to start a turntablist cover band. Here’s how it would work: take popular songs and get the individual instruments and vocals on separate tracks, throw on Serato, and play them as covers. It would be totally awesome.
107.3 FM is a radio station here in DC that plays “the best mix of ’80s, ’90s and today” (well, now their tag is “the best mix of EVERYTHING”, which is bullshit, but never mind that). I named this mix after that station. The station sucks but my mix really is ’80s, ’90s and today! It is a re-recording of a set I played at the final Terrordome party last weekend (RIP).
I have used some of these tracks in previous mixes posted here.
This is a mix I recorded for my friend who has been helping the DC–SDS organize anti-war dance parties in the streets of Washington.
A couple of things you should know:
1. Ninety percent of the tracks in this mix were selected by DC-SDS members. I picked a few that I just couldn’t not play (Michael Jackson)
2. I recorded this without practicing bc I am a busy man!
Uncle Hank, I made you a mixed tape. Do not accidentally listen to side B, or you will fall in love.
OK, so a looong time ago, when the Freeform DJ Collective first started, I had an idea to make a Valentine’s Day Compilation. King Koopa, DJ Sweetie Pie and I got together and started working on it, but after a few hours we got drunk, went dancing at Gate 54, and I ended up sleeping in my bathroom. E-Rock also sent in a contribution from the UK, the project has since been put on hold because King Koopa moved to New York and DJ Sweetie Pie left Freeform DJs to focus on other projects.
The other day I was just fucking around and found some of my notes from then, so I threw some of the tracks together. The final mix, if we ever pick this project back up, will be much more cohesive and feature more tricks and will make you really fall in love. Consider this a “practice sessionâ€, as if to say: I like you, but I’m not in like with you. Yet!
If you’ve seen me play recent (at FUR, Sonar or Beyond) you probably heard parts of this mix already.
The mix is about sixteen minutes long, and is just dubstep with some sloppy scratching and transitions. It is thrown together haphazardly, but is still fun. All the tracks here are old because I haven’t purchased dubstep records in a long time (basically since October I think!)
A review of my Tip Drill mix from Barbara, posted on a mailing list I subscribe to:
WOW! The ultimate ADD mix!
[...]
I jogged to this on my iPod and my head nearly exploded because I was trainspotting so hard.
One of the many things that this geezer likes about the younger set today is that they don’t think that ‘old music’ sucks just because it is old. Nice stuff featuring Jacko and Nirvana, among a cast of thousands. The older material isn’t so jarringly amongst some of the newer tracks, or the tracks of different genres. I’m not so much up on the new hip-hop-influenced material, so a set list would be welcome. (If you can. There probably is 25 different tracks which comprise a 40 min. set!)
So last night, after Beyond, I went to Five, and then around midnight I got an MP3 CDs to mix for an anti-war protest this Friday. I spent about 10 minutes reviewing the tracks, and then I pressed record. This is now the “official soundtrack” which is kind of weird. I think if I had more time (to learn the tracks and to find higher-bitrate samples) I could do a lot better. Anyway, the mix is only on sendspace for now.

As some of you know, I’ve been a regular guest at Club Five’s Arcadia — a weekly “alternative” night that features “industrial, gothic, synthpop, ebm, indie, electro, 80′s, britpop”. I don’t tend to fit in too well there. There are a few reasons why. For one, even though I used to listen to industrial music all the time in high school, nowadays I go months without even looking at my KFMDM CDs. Secondly, I have no goth friends anymore, other than the ones I hang out with at the goth nights. And third, my mixing style is very unorthodox, especially when it comes to the goth scene. The way it was explained to me was: goth people are very particular about their music, so when a song comes on that they like, they want to hear it through. And, as you all know, I get tired of tracks after a minute and just switch to the next one. Last time I played one guy was so angry at me for not letting tracks play out that he called me an asshole and bla bla bla. It was intense!
Anyway, I still do it because I love music and I love DJing and I get more compliments than insults, so I’m coming out on top.
Here is a mix I made in preparation for my gig there this Thursday. I think I’ve done a good job at playing classics that everyone knows, playing out the entire track (well sometimes, but notice that I’m playing 18 tracks in an hour instead of in 30 minutes), and still having fun with a little scratching and looping. I don’t get too crazy with the mixing and there’s a lot of just straight cutting-through to the next track. This is how they like it! Continue Reading »
This mix is a full hour long! Yikes! This one’s a little hard to swallow because I tried to throw all my ideas in one mix, so you have five-minute pockets of great shit in a sea of juxtaposed nonsense. Also I just upgraded to the latest Serato with auto-loop, and those of you who’ve seen me live know that when I have effects at my disposal, I abuse them to the maximum. But trust me, some good shit in here!
I’ve bolded the important parts so you can skip to them. Continue Reading »
Some more ideas. Just came up with this one, that is going to fucking rock everybody because it’s rock music. It sounds great, I just need to remember to bring my other laptop from the office so I can record it. Are you ready for this one!
As they say… “Share the knowledge, compete on execution.”
These six songs… The first three go together, and the second three go together, and all six together are just a bundle of alternative rock except for the first two, that are really only there because they have the same time signature as the Smiths song, and also because they are awesome. So here it is:
Outkast – The Whole World
Vitalic – Woo
Smiths – Panic (Live — the Rank version)
Death Cab for Cutie – We Laugh Indoors (EP version)
David Bowie – We Prick You
Foo Fighters – Everlong
OK here are some notes… YES I know Death Cab is lame, and Foo Fighters is lame. But these songs work so fucking well that I can’t not put them together.
This was originally a mix I made for my girlfriend but I kept changing it as I recorded… Took tracks out, added others, and now it’s something totally different. Anyway, this is the winter mix. A short mix for what will hopefully be a short winter.
Very minimal mixing in this one. A lot of just fadein-fadeouts. Easy! Continue Reading »
I am playing at a goth/industrial Halloween party in a couple of weeks. Since I don’t play at goth/industrial parties so often, I emailed the rest of the DJs there with a demo and asked them what I though… As I usually do in my mixes, I cut a lot of the songs short (this is 18 tracks in 45 minutes). I asked “Is that going to be an issue (ie are people going to be sad that I mix out before “the best part”)?” Here is what one of them said in response: Continue Reading »
I guess this would be called a “live mashup”? In one my Beyond sets I played these tracks on top of each other. Someone requested I rerecord it as a stand-alone… And here it is.
I have one of those phones that has a full keyboard and email capabilities. I also have an iPod. The three of us spend a lot of quality time on the metro together, where I make on-the-go playlists and email myself with ideas to use for mixes. Here are some of the ideas, direct copy/paste from my running list. I set up a gmail filter so everything with the subject “mix idea” goes directly into the list.
These are ideas that I haven’t used yet… But I might in the future. Continue Reading »

Remember the MixMeister one from the other day? This one is the real deal, with Serato and turntables. The tracklist is different as well. Turns out my six-year-old PC can handle Serato just fine! Anyway: Continue Reading »
So today as I was at work waiting on someone, I played around with MixMeister a little bit. MixMeister is a DJ mixing application that, in their own words, “lets the computer do the hard parts” (aka the fun parts, in my opinion). Basically it’s a way to beatmatch if you don’t know how to beatmatch. It’s also fun to play with when you have an hour of down time.
I used MixMeister to plan out the dubstep mix I want to record later on. Here it is.
Note: this was arranged in approximately twenty minutes. This software is extremely easy to work with. However, I would never release an official mix using this application, and I would never ever use it live. :-X
It’s been a long time since I’ve done a strictly hip-hop set live. I’m playing at Tsunami Tsundays along with King Koopa, Jukata and Cam-One tomorrow. Here is my practice mix to get back into that BPM range . As usual, strictly crowd favorites!!
audio removed to save space… if you want me to reup, leave a comment!
A rough draft of my spring summer mix. I will re-record based on the solicited feedback. As usual, this was done live in one take, and the trainwrecks are plentiful. But I’m not afraid of PUTTING MYSELF OUT THERE .
A short dance mix for you! I am posting this just because I haven’t posted a mix in a while (because I haven’t recorded in a while). This is actually part of the set I did live at snatch, but I tried to make it a little tighter… And it shows. There are a lot of things I could do better with this one. Next time.
Track list
Detroit Grand Pubahs – Sandwiches (Krafty Kuts Remix)
Daft Punk – Around The World
Eric Prydz – Proper Education (Noah Gibson 2007 Edit)
Now that we are running our own night (Beyond, Wednesdays above Cafe Luna), and along with the outdoor party, and playing with French Stewart, it is becoming more and more necessary for me to keep a backup mixer on hand. I am worried that with all these out shows, something will happen, and I need to have a secondary mixer for emergencies.
I ended up going with the Vestax VMC-002XL. It is a battle mixer, which is really all I need, and has XLR outs (good for the clubs). Because this is strictly a backup mixer and not one I will be relying on most of the time (hopefully), I needed only the bare essentials, which are (as far as I’m concerned)
3-band EQs with kills.
two phono, two line.
ability to have master come out of headphones (some of the lower ends only let you cue from headphones)
crossfader contour adjustments. this one only has “mix” and “cut” settings. Far more primitive compared to the Rane, where you can adjust the slope per side, but this is good enough.
Got it from Turntable Lab for $170, shipped. Not bad for the price! I’ll write more about it when it arrives and I discover all the little things it’s missing (like no aux in for laptop/ipod, for example).
I’ve been working on this for a little bit. I’ll probably incorporate it into my next mix. This is a rough draft–the levels are off as usual, but you get the idea.
Recorded live using Serato, except for the “freeform djs” thing to the beginning (added later with Adobe Audition).
Sources:
Intro = Biz Markie on Len’s “Beautiful Day”
the first verse is Bran Van 3000′s “Old School”. The “my special moment to shine in the spotlight” is from the same track.
The song played over the rest of the routine is “One Man Army” by Prodigy and Tom Morello
“What? I’ve been using my Technics” = Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf’s “Soon To Be Large”
“I gots lots of cash stashed in money bags” = someone from LBC Crew on Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Gold Rush”
“Need to book a flight tonight” = Prince Paul, as sampled by the Avalanches in “Flight Tonight”
audio removed to save space… if you want me to reup, leave a comment!
Here is the goth mix I am going to give out to the goth community here in DC as my demo. I’m still a house head 4 life, ok, but I also like to rock out to KMFDM once in a while. So here we go
