Winter Goth Mix

Dec 25 2007 Published by Dan under music

As some of you know, I’ve been a regular guest at Club Five’s Arcadia — a weekly “alternative” night that features “industrial, gothic, synthpop, ebm, indie, electro, 80′s, britpop”. I don’t tend to fit in too well there. There are a few reasons why. For one, even though I used to listen to industrial music all the time in high school, nowadays I go months without even looking at my KFMDM CDs. Secondly, I have no goth friends anymore, other than the ones I hang out with at the goth nights. And third, my mixing style is very unorthodox, especially when it comes to the goth scene. The way it was explained to me was: goth people are very particular about their music, so when a song comes on that they like, they want to hear it through. And, as you all know, I get tired of tracks after a minute and just switch to the next one. Last time I played one guy was so angry at me for not letting tracks play out that he called me an asshole and bla bla bla. It was intense!

Anyway, I still do it because I love music and I love DJing and I get more compliments than insults, so I’m coming out on top.

Here is a mix I made in preparation for my gig there this Thursday. I think I’ve done a good job at playing classics that everyone knows, playing out the entire track (well sometimes, but notice that I’m playing 18 tracks in an hour instead of in 30 minutes), and still having fun with a little scratching and looping. I don’t get too crazy with the mixing and there’s a lot of just straight cutting-through to the next track. This is how they like it!

DJ “Routine”

Apr 28 2007 Published by Dan under music

I’ve been working on this for a little bit. I’ll probably incorporate it into my next mix. This is a rough draft–the levels are off as usual, but you get the idea.

Recorded live using Serato, except for the “freeform djs” thing to the beginning (added later with Adobe Audition).

Sources:

  • One Man BandIntro = Biz Markie on Len’s “Beautiful Day”
  • the first verse is Bran Van 3000′s “Old School”. The “my special moment to shine in the spotlight” is from the same track.
  • The song played over the rest of the routine is “One Man Army” by Prodigy and Tom Morello
  • “What? I’ve been using my Technics” = Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf’s “Soon To Be Large”
  • “I gots lots of cash stashed in money bags” = someone from LBC Crew on Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Gold Rush”
  • “Need to book a flight tonight” = Prince Paul, as sampled by the Avalanches in “Flight Tonight”

Yep…

Here is the goth mix I am going to give out to the goth community here in DC as my demo. I’m still a house head 4 life, ok, but I also like to rock out to KMFDM once in a while. So here we go
