Mix 107.3… As heard at The Terrordome

Jul 31 2008 Published by Dan under music

107.3 FM is a radio station here in DC that plays “the best mix of ’80s, ’90s and today” (well, now their tag is “the best mix of EVERYTHING”, which is bullshit, but never mind that). I named this mix after that station. The station sucks but my mix really is ’80s, ’90s and today! It is a re-recording of a set I played at the final Terrordome party last weekend (RIP).

I have used some of these tracks in previous mixes posted here.

Track list follows… Continue Reading »

Funk the War 4 (two hour mix)

Jun 19 2008 Published by Dan under music

This is a mix I recorded for my friend who has been helping the DC–SDS organize anti-war dance parties in the streets of Washington.

A couple of things you should know:
1. Ninety percent of the tracks in this mix were selected by DC-SDS members. I picked a few that I just couldn’t not play (Michael Jackson)

2. I recorded this without practicing bc I am a busy man!

ANYWAY HERE IS THE TRACK LIST Continue Reading »

Love Songs Part One

Jun 01 2008 Published by Dan under music

Uncle Hank, I made you a mixed tape. Do not accidentally listen to side B, or you will fall in love.

OK, so a looong time ago, when the Freeform DJ Collective first started, I had an idea to make a Valentine’s Day Compilation. King Koopa, DJ Sweetie Pie and I got together and started working on it, but after a few hours we got drunk, went dancing at Gate 54, and I ended up sleeping in my bathroom. E-Rock also sent in a contribution from the UK, the project has since been put on hold because King Koopa moved to New York and DJ Sweetie Pie left Freeform DJs to focus on other projects.

The other day I was just fucking around and found some of my notes from then, so I threw some of the tracks together. The final mix, if we ever pick this project back up, will be much more cohesive and feature more tricks and will make you really fall in love. Consider this a “practice session”, as if to say: I like you, but I’m not in like with you. Yet!

If you’ve seen me play recent (at FUR, Sonar or Beyond) you probably heard parts of this mix already.

Funk the War 2 mix

Feb 14 2008 Published by Dan under music

funk the war So last night, after Beyond, I went to Five, and then around midnight I got an MP3 CDs to mix for an anti-war protest this Friday. I spent about 10 minutes reviewing the tracks, and then I pressed record. This is now the “official soundtrack” which is kind of weird. I think if I had more time (to learn the tracks and to find higher-bitrate samples) I could do a lot better. Anyway, the mix is only on sendspace for now.

Winter Goth Mix

Dec 25 2007 Published by Dan under music

As some of you know, I’ve been a regular guest at Club Five’s Arcadia — a weekly “alternative” night that features “industrial, gothic, synthpop, ebm, indie, electro, 80′s, britpop”. I don’t tend to fit in too well there. There are a few reasons why. For one, even though I used to listen to industrial music all the time in high school, nowadays I go months without even looking at my KFMDM CDs. Secondly, I have no goth friends anymore, other than the ones I hang out with at the goth nights. And third, my mixing style is very unorthodox, especially when it comes to the goth scene. The way it was explained to me was: goth people are very particular about their music, so when a song comes on that they like, they want to hear it through. And, as you all know, I get tired of tracks after a minute and just switch to the next one. Last time I played one guy was so angry at me for not letting tracks play out that he called me an asshole and bla bla bla. It was intense!

Anyway, I still do it because I love music and I love DJing and I get more compliments than insults, so I’m coming out on top.

Here is a mix I made in preparation for my gig there this Thursday. I think I’ve done a good job at playing classics that everyone knows, playing out the entire track (well sometimes, but notice that I’m playing 18 tracks in an hour instead of in 30 minutes), and still having fun with a little scratching and looping. I don’t get too crazy with the mixing and there’s a lot of just straight cutting-through to the next track. This is how they like it!

Mix: 60m

Dec 19 2007 Published by Dan under music

This mix is a full hour long! Yikes! This one’s a little hard to swallow because I tried to throw all my ideas in one mix, so you have five-minute pockets of great shit in a sea of juxtaposed nonsense. Also I just upgraded to the latest Serato with auto-loop, and those of you who’ve seen me live know that when I have effects at my disposal, I abuse them to the maximum. But trust me, some good shit in here!

I’ve bolded the important parts so you can skip to them.

Audio removed due to space issues… If you want a reup, leave a comment!

A quick live edit of CSS’ “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex”. I just sped it up a bit (from 100 to 125 BPM) and added a lot of echo loops.

Equipment used: Denon DN-S1000.

A rough draft of my spring summer mix. I will re-record based on the solicited feedback. As usual, this was done live in one take, and the trainwrecks are plentiful. But I’m not afraid of PUTTING MYSELF OUT THERE :D .
